The Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ababu Namwamba has lauded newly-crowned Boston Marathon champions Hellen Obiri and Evans Chebet.

The dominant wins saw Chebet successfully defend his title and Obiri bagged her first marathon title after making her debut over the distance at last year’s New York City Marathon. This was Obiri’s second marathon.

“On behalf of the whole government, I want to send our hearty congratulations to Chebet and Obiri for flying the Kenyan flag high. They have continued a very proud Kenyan tradition that has made the Boston Marathon our own Kenyan race,” he said.

He also appreciated the efforts of the 2022 Chicago Marathon champion Benson Kipruto who settled for third place (2:06:06) and the world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge who placed sixth in 2:09:23.

“We are so proud of all of you. We continue to be world beaters because of you,” he said.

Meanwhile, Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei also hailed praises on the champions for achieving the milestones.

“I want to congratulate them for bringing this very good dues to Kenya once again. Kenyans have dominated this race for a long time and Obiri and Chebet have not let us down. It’s not easy to win such races in both categories. I also want to congratulate all other Kenyans who were in the race,” he said.
