Kenya is currently struggling in distances where they once dominated like the 3000m Steeplechase, 5000m, and 10,000m.

Nicholas Kimeli has pleaded with Kenyans not to lose hope in the national team as they gear up for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary from August 19 to 27.

In the past few years, Team Kenya has failed to deliver quality performances on the global stage, and most of the time, Kenya has finished outside the top three countries in the World Championships and even Olympic Games.

In distances where Kenya dominated like the 3000m Steeplechase, 5000m, and 10,000m, the country has recently played second fiddle to upcoming Ethiopians, Ugandans, and Moroccans.

For instance, during last year’s World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Team Kenya failed to live up to the billing and lost most of the races they were once known for.

However, Kimeli believes that there is still room for improvement and the country should rally behind them as they head to Budapest next month.

“We are promising you Kenyans…please don’t lose hope in us, keep praying for us and we shall bring back home something good. Have hopes in Team Kenya and we shall make you proud,” Kimeli said.

Kimeli will be doubling in the 5000m and 10,000m and he has emphasised that teamwork is the only way to prosperity. He won the 5000m in last year’s Diamond League Final in Zurich and got a wild card to the global event.

For the 10,000m, he battled it out with other athletes during the World Championships National Trials and emerged the winner.

He is aware of the threats that Ugandans pose to them including World Cross-country champion Jacob Kiplimo who finished third during last year’s edition of the event.

“I know that they are in great shape…in order for us to conquer them, we need to cooperate and that’s how we shall dethrone them,” he said.

In the 5000m, he will be joined by Daniel Simiu, Jacob Krop, and Cornelius Kemboi while in the 10,000m, Kimeli will enjoy the company of Kibiwott Kandie and Bernard Kibet.
