This season, the duo has clashed twice and recorded different results in both races.

The current African record holder Ferdinand Omanyala and the former record holder Akani Simbine are set to clash as the Diamond League Meeting heads to Monaco on Friday, July 21.

Omanyala and Simbine take their rivalry way back to 2021 when Omanyala edged the South African at the Diamond League Meeting in Brussels. Omanyala finished fourth in the race while Simbine finished sixth.

2021 was also the year that Omanyala stripped off Simbine the African record holder title after the ran a thrilling race to finish second at the Kip Keino Classic and clock 9.77. Another clash was during the 2022 Commonwealth Games where Omanyala dethroned Simbine as he impressed the crowds to clinch the 100m title at the Games.

This season, the duo has clashed twice and recorded different results in both races. In the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Morocco, Simbine defeated Omanyala as he finished second while Omanyala completed the podium.

At the Meeting in Florence, Italy, Omanyala finished second behind World Champion Fred Kerley as Simbine finished fourth. They now head to Monaco, both in good shape and ready to show the whole world what to expect at the World Championships.

Since the Florence clash, Omanyala went to Paris and also finished second in the 100m before jetting into the country for the World Championships National Trials where he ran the third fastest time in the world so far this year to win the 100m final (9.85).

Simbine has not also been resting since he has managed to win two more Diamond League Meetings dominantly. He won both the Diamond League Meetings in Stockholm and Silesia. In Silesia, he defeated Kerley, something that came as a surprise to most. He goes to Monaco with utmost confidence and in search of another victory before the World Championships.

Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo will also be in the mix and hoping to show the seniors dust. Another youngster in the mix is Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake who will enjoy the company of compatriot Kishane Thompson. America’s Courtney Lindsay has also entered the race.
