Chebet repeated her heroics from the 5000m to win yet another gold medal in the 10,000m.
Beatrice Chebet's magnificent week at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympic continued as she won both her and Kenya's second gold medal of the ongoing games with a blistering run in the 10,000 meters on Friday night.
Seven minutes into the race, Chebet opted to surge forward into second position, right behind Japan’s Rino Goshima, as she sought to keep tabs with the pacemaker, with Sifan Hassan opting to intentionally sit behind as is her usual strategy.
The controversial Gudaf Tsegay also decided to stay in the middle of the park, as they sought to conserve their energy and clearly aimed to choose the right moment to kick on.
16 minutes in, more runners had now surged ahead, including Kenyan-born Kazakhstani Daisy Jepkemei, now occupying second place.
However, she opted to keep tabs close to the leader, repeating the strategy she executed a few nights ago when she won the 5000m gold.
After 21 minutes, Chebet’s fellow Kenyans Lilian Kasait and Margaret Kipkemboi would join her in the front four, which Hassan was still keenly closing tabs on. The Ethiopians were also in very hot pursuit and by the 24th minute, they were already overlapping Megan Keith.
In the 27th minute, the runners really started to kick. When the bell rang, all three Kenyans started to kick on. However, both Kasait and Kipkemboi started to fade, as Nadia Battocletti of Italy and Hassan took advantage and kicked on.
Despite pressure from Battocletti, Chebet held her nerve to clinch her second gold medal of the ongoing games, with the other two Kenyans settling for fourth and fifth.
