The second heat had in form Prudence Sekgodiso who has the pressure to reclaim South Africa’s 800m title following Caster Semenya’s victory at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi was also in the mix in the hotly-contested round.

As many athletes start their Olympic campaigns today, Coach Alex Sang has expressed worry about one major thing that might affect their chances of posting impressive performances at the Paris Olympics.
The race was eventually won by Cuban athlete Daily Cooper who clocked 1:58.88 ahead of the South African who finished second in 1:59.84. Rachel Pellaud completed the podium in a time of 2:00.07 with Nakaayi missing the podium place and will contest for a slot in the repechage round.
Heat three had Kenyan Vivian Chebet making her Olympic debut and going up against very strong opponents including Great Britain’s wunderkind Phoebe Gill and Ethiopia’s Worknesh Mesele.

Heat six saw Jamaica’s Natoya Goule-Toppin take the top honours in 1:58.66 with Claudia Hollingsworth finishing second in 1:58.77. Kenya’s Lilian Odira completed the podium in personal best time of 1:58.83.
