She will be making her debut at the London Marathon on Sunday, April 23.

2021 New York Marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir is not resting on her laurels as she set sights on the women’s World Marathon record.

The record was set by fellow compatriot Brigid Kosgei at the 2019 Chicago Marathon when she obliterated a strong field to win the race in 2:14:04.

“I still want to break the women’s marathon world record. When I say I will do something, I have to accomplish that,” Jepchirchir said.

Jepchirchir brags of previously setting a new women’s World Half Marathon record of 1:05:16 in 2020 at the championships in Gdynia, Poland. Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey is however the current record holder (1:02:52) over the distance.

Last year, she also became the first woman to have won the Olympic Marathon, New York City Marathon, and the Boston Marathon.

However, her upbringing was not an easy one after she lost her mother in 1995 when she was two years old. Her father had three wives and she came from a family of 28 children.

Going to school was tough for her but her uncle, Reverend Joseph Barno took her in and cared for her. She also extended a hand of gratitude to her husband, Davies Ng’eno, who also doubles up as her coach.

“Life was not easy growing up but I had to overcome the challenges. If I had chosen to give up, I would not be here today,” she said.

On his part, Ng’eno termed Jepchirchir as a resilient athlete who takes everything positively and does not give up.

She will be taking on the tough course at the London Marathon on Sunday, April 23. “I know the field is strong and hard to beat. But I believe with my hard work, I will be able to achieve my target,” she said.
