Kirui's major priority at the moment is to qualify for the World Championships where she intends to make a statement.

Former Commonwealth Games 3000m Steeplechase bronze medallist Purity Kirui is looking forward to a fruitful season following a bout with an illness.

Kirui revealed that she had been battling sickness but she is now back and is looking to earn a slot in the national team at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary from August 19 to 27.

Since she opened her season, Kirui has only competed in two races. The 3000m Steeplechase at the Kip Keino Classic where she finished ninth and the Kenya Police Championships where she won the race.

She has not participated in the Diamond League Meetings due to her illness but she has now promised to be back and fans should expect to see more of her.

“I haven’t competed in many races since I’ve been unwell but I thank God I’m slowly coming back. I haven’t raced internationally so far but I want to train effectively so that I can make Team Kenya to the World Championships,” she said.

The former All-Africa Games bronze medallist revealed that as compared to back then, the barrier and water race has now gained more traction and is becoming more competitive.

She revealed that upcoming strong women including the world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech and Commonwealth Games champion Jackline Chepkoech are taking up the sport and placing Kenya on the world map.

“Back then, when we were with Milcah Chemos, there was no tough competition and it was easy to make it to the top. However, at the moment we have seen great athletes who are coming up and that is good for our country,” she said.
