The event was initially scheduled for Sunday, May 21.

Nairobi City Marathon race director Ibrahim Hussein has announced the postponement of the event to Friday, July 2 this year due to the overcrowded athletics calendar.

Speaking during the media briefing at the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani, Hussein added that the race, which was initially scheduled for Sunday, May 21, has already attracted over 20,000 runners who will participate in the different race categories.

The categories include the full marathon, half marathon and the 10km race.

“We wish to inform the public that the second edition of the Nairobi City Marathon has been postponed to July 2.

"We have registered 2500 athletes in 5km and 10km event and our target 15-20,000 athletes in this year's event. The course remains the same with the only slight change being at the start area," Hussein said.

He also asked for pardon for any inconveniences caused and urged the athletes to continue training ahead of the event.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused even as we urge athletes to continue training ahead of the new dates announced,” he said.

Meanwhile, the prize money remains a whooping Ksh24 million to be awarded to the winners of the 42km distance race.

The top 20 athletes to cross the finish line in the full marathon will be awarded cash prizes with the 20th athlete to cross the finish line being awarded Ksh30,000. The runners-up and first runners-up will be awarded Ksh2.25 million and 1.5 million respectively.

Over half marathon distance, the top six athletes will be awarded cash prizes with the sixth-place finisher bagging Ksh20,000. The top three athletes will walk away with Ksh150,000, 80,000 and 50,000 respectively.

Over the 10km distance, the top six athletes will also be awarded with the sixth-place finisher bagging KSh7,500. The podium finishers will walk away with Ksh100,000, 60,000 and 40,000 respectively.
