Kiptum made headlines after his scintillating run which saw him claim top honours at the London Marathon earlier this year.

Many athletics fans from across the globe were anticipating a showdown between the second-fastest marathoner in the world, Kelvin Kiptum, versus the fastest marathoner in the world, Eliud Kipchoge.

Still, unfortunately, it will not happen this year. Kiptum, the reigning London Marathon, will be heading to the Chicago Marathon on October 8 while Kipchoge had announced he will return to the Berlin Marathon on September 24.

Kiptum made headlines after his scintillating run which saw him claim top honours at the London Marathon earlier this year. He led from gun to tape and was typically sprinting during the whole 42km course, something that caught the eyes of many.

The 23-year-old clocked a Personal Best time of 2:01:25 to cut the tape, missing out on Kipchoge’s world record time of 2:01:09 by 14 seconds. Another thing that shocked the world was the fact that the London Marathon was just but his second full marathon.

He made his debut at last year’s Valencia Marathon where he clocked 2:01:53, the third fastest time in the marathon history, to win the race.

As he heads to Chicago, he is the fastest in the field and will be hoping to make history one more time. however, he faces a stern test since the race has also attracted defending champion Benson Kipruto who, equally, has had a great season so far.

Kipruto opened his season with a third-place finish at the Guadalajara International Half Marathon then proceeded to the Boston Marathon where he finished third. He then proceeded to the Boston 10km road race where he finished seventh. He goes back to Chicago with the hope of retaining his title.

The race has also attracted Belgium’s Bashir Abdi and the Ethiopian duo of Dawit Wolde and Seifu Tura who will pose as challengers to the throne.
