Robert Kipkemboi has officially been crowned the Nairobi City Marathon champion after destroying a strong field on Sunday morning to take top honours in the highly contested race.

The race kicked off at 6:30 a.m. at the Nyayo National Stadium with a group of more than 10 men contesting for the highly coveted title and prize money of Ksh 3.5 million.

In the mix was also the defending champion Brimin Misoi who was hoping to successfully defend his title but unfortunately, he failed to achieve the target. However, he revealed that he had been battling an injury that could have probably slowed him down.

Kipkemboi fought hard and managed to carry the day when he cut the tape first in 2:07:38 ahead of Charles Mneria who clocked 2:08:04. He attested that the race was not a walk in the park and he had to fight hard to get a win.

In a post-race interview, Kipkemboi said: “Today I came to compete because I had missed out on an opportunity last time and I am happy that I have won today.”

He added that the presence of the defending champion in the race did not pose a threat to him as he was focused on achieving a podium finish.

“It was not a challenge for me because I wanted to finish in the podium bracket…I was focused on that," he said.

The marathon was Kipkemboi’s first race since the season started. His last race was during last year’s N Kolay Istanbul Marathon where he won in 2:10:18.

He revealed that his next stop will be at the Istanbul Marathon in November where he intends to successfully defend his title. “I might return to Istanbul later this year…after this, I will go back to training,” he said.

In the women's field, Naom Jebet took top honours as she cut the tape in 2:24:33 ahead of Sharon Arusho who clocked 2:25:30. Judith Jerubet sealed the podium in 2:27:01.
