Ruth Chepng’etich, the new world marathon record holder, believes she deserves greater recognition for inspiring others.

Ruth Chepng’etich has finally answered the most asked question about her career as an athlete; Is she recognised enough?

The newly crowned world marathon record holder revealed that after her exploits at the Chicago Marathon, she is glad that people started giving her the respect she deserves but revealed that more can be done.

At the Chicago Marathon, Chepng’etich clocked a stunning 2:09:56 to win the race, shattering Tigst Assefa’s world record time of 2:11:53 that she set at the 2023 Berlin Marathon. Chepng’etich explained that she has inspired a lot of people and getting recognition would help her work harder.

“With my hard work, I think I should get the recognition because I’ve motivated a lot of people, I’ve inspired many people,” Ruth Chepng’etich said.

“I have inspired young people and for us as young women, we are doing incredible things. As women, we work a lot in our entire lives and we do that for the betterment of tomorrow and that is why we need to be recognised.”

The former world champion added that she looks up to legendary Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Vivian Cheruiyot. Ruth Chepng’etich revealed that Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is a true definition of hard work and she highly resonates with her.

She added that Vivian Cheruiyot has had a great transition from running the track to the roads and she also looks up to her. Watching the Olympics and World Championships, Ruth Chepng’etich nurtured her athletics dream and managed to become of the greatest sprinters of all time.

“It depends on which race that is but I like both the marathon and half marathon. However, I mostly like the marathon because I broke the world record recently,” she revealed.

“I have watched the Olympics and World Championships and the woman who has inspired me the most is Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica…I like her so much. I also watch Vivian Cheruiyot.”
