African marathon enthusiasts now have something to brag about as the Rwenzori Marathon has been listed among the world's most stunning marathons.
Barely a year since its inception, the Rwenzori marathon has already attracted international attention and rated number one by a reputable US newspaper, USA Today.
The marathon, which is held at the foot of the iconic Rwenzori mountain ranges, started as a social enterprise to promote tourism and has already surpassed expectations.
The first edition, which took place last year, drew over 3000 participants from across the world.
This year's event is scheduled to take place on September 2, and it is expected to attract triple the number of participants from last year.
It features a full marathon (42 km), a half marathon (21 km), and a 5 km fun run.
The marathon aims to empower communities, promote sports tourism, and foster healthy living.
Allan Andiema (Uganda) won the men’s 42 km race after clocking 2:31:49. The women’s category was won by Kenya’s Isgah Cheruto (2:50:58).
Andiema described the adventure as "one of a kind" and "magical terrain," after completing the challenge.
The half marathon was won by Gilbert Kamutwire (Uganda) with a time of 1:06:56.
The marathon winds through Kasese Municipality, Kilembe, Chanjojo, Mburakasaka, Kasanga, Muzogoti, Kirembe, Portal Road, Rwenzori Road, Kilembe Road, and Rukidi III.
According to the organisers, the event is more than just a competition adventure; they are looking to make a greater impact for the Kasese community.
Registration for the marathon will be open to the public soon, and interested parties can visit www.mtrwenzorimarathon.com
