The championship is set to be held from March 10 to 11 at the Benjamin William Mkapa Stadium, Dar es Salaam.
The second Athletics Kenya (AK) meet to be held at the Nyayo Stadium beginning Friday, February 24, will be used to select a team to represent the country at the East Africa Under-18 and Under-20 Championships in Tanzania.
The event is also one of the three local championships where athletes looking to participate at the World Athletics Championships scheduled for August 17 to 29 in Budapest, Hungary, are meant to qualify from.
The meet is approved as a ranking event by World Athletics and athletes will be able to get a chance to improve their world ranking with the times they post.
AK Youth and Development Committee chairman Barnaba Korir called on all athletes who dream of taking part in this year’s international events to participate in order to increase their chances of qualifying.
“This is not just a normal standard event…we want to ensure that athletes who come to compete qualify for other major upcoming events like the World Championships,” Korir said.
He added that the athletes will also be subjected to anti-doping tests. “We want ADAK and AIU to work closely together to ensure that our athletes run clean,” he said.
