Trevor Painter has been singing praises about Keely Hodgkinson and he added another accolade that made the Olympic champion thrive in Paris.

Keely Hodgkinson’s head coach Trevor Painter has disclosed one more special quality about the reigning Olympic 800m champion that made her triumph over Tsige Duguma and Mary Moraa.

Painter has been singing praises about the world 800m bronze medallist since her victory at the Paris Olympic Games and he has not shied away from giving out some of the invaluable qualities that make her special.

In an interview with Athletics Weekly, Trevor Painter pointed out that one of the strengths of the Briton athlete is that she knows how to capitalize on pressure and deliver. She clocked 1:56.72 to win the race ahead of Tsige Duguma who clocked a stunning 1:57.15. Mary Moraa rounded up the podium in 1:57.42.

“One of Keely’s biggest strengths is her composure under pressure and she thrives on it. Keely lives for that gladiatorial experience,” Trevor Painter said.

In a previous interview, Trevor Painter also revealed that Keely Hodgkinson’s win and unbeaten 800m run this season has attracted a lot of runners to his low-key camp. He explained that Hodgkinson deserves all she has achieved this season, thanks to her exceptional willingness to learn and sacrifice.

“You can never guarantee an Olympic medal, but a large thing is the mindset. An athlete who goes the extra yard and does a little bit more – that’s a good sign. Does the athlete turn up on time, are they attentive, do they want to learn? It all has to do with character traits,” Trevor Painter said.

“There’s a Polish girl, a Danish girl, an Italian, two French, three Irish, an Argentinian, and a Mexican. The interest since Paris has gone through the roof, everyone wants to be in the group and we’ve had to turn some really good standard athletes down because it's full and we are at capacity.”

On her part, Keely Hodgkinson has also set ambitious goals ahead of next season. She hopes to go for the world title, one of the accolades missing in her CV.

At the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, she finished second in the women’s 800m and proceeded to finish third at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

At the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, she hopes to go for the world title. Her coach also hopes she will go for the world indoor record and hopefully the world outdoor record.
