World 5,000m silver medallist Mohamed Katir has been provisionally suspended for missing three doping tests but is planning to appeal the decision.

World 5,000 meters silver medallist Mohamed Katir has announced his intention to appeal against the provisional suspension imposed by the Athletes' Integrity Unit (AIU) following allegations of missed doping tests.

The Spanish runner, renowned for his record-breaking performances, including holding the world record in the indoor 3,000 meters and the European record in the outdoor 5,000 meters, finds himself at a critical juncture in his career.

At the heart of Katir's defense is his contention that the alleged whereabouts failures do not constitute a violation of doping regulations.

"I consider that there is no violation arising from three location failures in the last 12 months," was quoted by Reuters.

He further elaborated that during some of the instances cited by the AIU, he was present at the designated location, adhering to the schedule he had provided.

Katir clinched silver in the 5,000 meters at the world athletics championships in Budapest, following a bronze medal performance in the 1,500 meters at the previous world championships in Eugene, Oregon.

The Spaniard's statement emphasized the rigorous doping control regime he has been subjected to, noting numerous out-of-competition tests for both urine and blood samples, all of which he has passed without issue.

"It is important to keep in mind that we are not dealing with a case of violating doping rules for the use of prohibited substances or methods, or even for evading out-of-competition doping controls," he remarked.

In Budapest, Katir's performance was a highlight of the championships, finishing ahead of Kenya's Krop and securing silver with a time of 13:11.44.

His triumph over formidable competitors, including the challenge posed by Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who retained his crown, and other top athletes, demonstrates Katir's position as a leading figure in middle and long-distance running.

Born in 1998 in Ksar El Kebir, Morocco, Katir moved to Spain with his family at a young age. He received Spanish nationality in 2019, representing Spain internationally since January 1, 2020.
