Peter Mwaniki has explained why beating three-time winner Kibiwott Kandie at the KDF Cross-country Championships means a lot to him.

Peter Mwaniki emerged as the winner of the Kenya Defense Forces Cross-country Championships held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Thursday and he could not hide his joy as he cut the tape.

The race had attracted some of the strongest cross-country runners including defending champion Kibiwott Kandie who was hoping to defend his title but unfortunately faded to finish fifth.

Mwaniki cut the tape in 29:51 as his closest challenger Dismus Lokira finished second in 29:54 while Daniel Mungut completed the podium in 29:56.

In a post-race interview, Mwaniki was in awe of his exploits and noted that beating Kandie gave him confidence that he can also conquer champions.

“This race has helped me gain experience and build my confidence…in my heart, I knew that Kibiwott Kandie, who has won here three times was coming to retain his title," Mwaniki told Nation Sports.

"I thank God who has helped me because now I believe I can win any race."

Meanwhile, the women’s race saw Winny Chemutai of Isiolo Barracks lead from gun to tape and clinch the title in 33:25.

Cynthia Chepngeno clocked 33:26 for second as Diana Chepkorir wrapped up the podium places in 33:42. Chemutai noted that teamwork is what saved the day for her since she had discussed with her teammates how to go about the race.

“The thing that helped team Isiolo was teamwork. I want to make the cut to the national team either in the All-African Games or the World Cross-country Championships,” she said.
