Halimah Nakaayi revealed that the high cost of living and coaching fees in the US forced her to relocate to Kenya, where she now trains alongside elite athletes like Faith Kipyegon.

Former world 800m champion Halimah Nakaayi has revealed the major reason behind her split with Sifan Hassan’s coach Tim Rowberry and why she relocated from the US to Kenya.

The Ugandan star pointed out that staying in the US as an elite athlete is a bit expensive especially if you do not earn a good amount of money from the races.

Halimah Nakaayi explained that she had to pay her coach a lot of money and at some point, she could not do it and had to ask her management for financial support, something that did not last for long as she had to find a permanent solution.

That is when she decided to relocate to Kaptagat in Kenya and join some of her compatriots, world record holders Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo.

“The expenses in America were overwhelming. For instance, I had to pay the coach $1000 every month. I managed to pay for a year, but when I asked my management for support, it became too difficult. Moving to Kaptagat was a more cost-effective solution,” Halimah Nakaayi said as quoted by New Vision.

In Kaptagat, she gets the chance to train alongside great athletes like 1500m world record holder and three-time Olympic champion, Faith Kipyegon, citing it as a great stride towards her career growth.

Halimah Nakaayi added that she also trained with Olympic marathon champion Sifan Hassan and it was a life changing moment for her.

“Training alongside athletes like Faith Kipyegon and Sifan Hassan has been incredibly inspiring. These strong women have competed in multiple events at major championships and won medals,” Nakaayi revealed.

“If they can achieve such greatness, I believe I can too, as long as I put in the hard work. Things are going well so far but adjusting to a new setting takes time. being closer to home has eased some of my worries, especially regarding finances.”

She hopes the move will help her focus solely on her career as she looks to reclaim the world title she won at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
