Kenya made a clean sweep as Hellen Obiri and Vivian Cheruiyot finised second and third respectively

Newly-crowned 2024 New York City marathon champion Sheila Chepkirui has revealed how she had to dig deep to reign supreme in the hotly-contested marathon on November 3.

It was a clean sweep for Kenya in the women's category, with the 33-year-old Chepkirui winning in 2:24:35, coming clear of 2023 champion and compatriot Hellen Obiri. The Olympic bronze medallist faded in the closing stages to clock in at 2:24:49.

Kenya swept the top three female places as 41-year-old Vivian Cheruiyot finished third at 2:25:21. Chepkirui who was debuting on the course revealed the difficulties she faced especially in the tail-end of the race.

"I pushed myself to the limit. In the last mile, it was really hard. I pushed myself," she said. The 2016 5000m African champion added: "This means that my training has been good. I'm so happy."

It was an unforgettable debut considering the challenging, sneakily hilly New York course.

Since 2010, Chepkirui is the sixth Kenyan woman to claim the New York title. The country's sweep of the women's podium marks a NYC first since 1976, when the U.S. women went 1-2-3.
