Hellen Obiri has opened up on the pressures that came after she bagged two World Major Marathons (Boston and New York City Marathons) in a year.
Hellen Obiri had the most amazing 2023 season that saw her bag two World Major Marathon titles, the New York City and Boston Marathon titles.
The two-time World 5000m champion opened her season with a commanding win at the Boston Marathon, the second marathon in her career since her debut at the 2022 New York City Marathon where she finished sixth.
Obiri then returned to the streets of New York City to make things right and she was surely in a class of her own as she destroyed a strong field to clinch the title.

Reigning Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri finished second in her season opener at the Houston Half Marathon.

However, bagging the two titles came with a lot of expectations from people and Obiri is burning the midnight oil to ensure she keeps winning.
“2023 was my best year…winning two major marathons, Boston and New York gave me a lot of hope and excitement to continue working hard.
“When you win Boston and New York, everybody will keep a close eye on what you will do next. So, for me, I have to work extra hard so that I keep on doing great things,” Obiri said during a press conference before the Aramco Houston Half Marathon.
Meanwhile, during the half marathon that was her season opener, the Kenyan finished an impressive second as Ethiopia’s Sutume Kebede won the race in style.
Obiri will be gearing up for the Boston Marathon where she hopes to defend her title before hopefully heading to the Olympic Games in Paris, France where she seeks to win her first Olympic gold medal.
She has already been selected in the provisional squad for the marathon and Athletics Kenya are supposed to scale down to three athletes.

About her Boston Marathon title defense, Obiri said: “I am excited to return to the 2024 Boston Marathon to try to defend my title.
“Boston is an historic race and I would like to add my name further to its history on April 15. Winning such a historic marathon with my family waiting at the finish line was an amazing experience.”
