Michael Johnson emphasises the rarity and hard work behind becoming a professional athlete.

Track and field is one of the overlooked events in the world but come to think of it, athletes go out of their way to train hard and sacrifice a lot to break records and win titles and they deserve some level of respect.

One of the most accomplished sprinters, Michael Johnson, has detailed some of the rare achievements that athletes have, that people rarely notice or take for granted. He revealed that being an Olympic champion or even turning professional is a huge and rare milestone for athletes.

How many athletes started their careers at a young age and ended up being forgotten and never turning professional? I’m sure you know one or two athletes who have hit dead ends when it came to pursuing that pathway and that’s why Michael Johnson views that as a huge milestone.

He added that winning medals and insisted on Olympic medals is not something to joke about because athletes work for that for four years or more. In an interview, Gabby Thomas opened up about the process that goes on in preparing for the Olympic Games and oh boy, it’s not an easy thing.

“It’s not easy to become an Olympic champion, it’s not easy to become the best in the world, it’s not easy to even become a professional. One of the things that makes it so great, and so desirable is that not everybody can have it. There are only a few of us at the very top that get to be there,” Michael Johnson said in a previous interview on the High-Performance podcast.

He added that being brutally honest with himself shaped how he trained for races and never expected anything to come easy, something that athletes of these days should try to embrace.

The former 200m world record holder noted that growing up, nothing was handed to him ‘just like that’ and he had to work hard to achieve it. Michael Johnson explained that his neighbourhood shaped how he acted as an adult.

“I’m very honest with myself, I’m very much evidence-based in everything that I do. I believed in myself because I had the evidence to prove that and I also had the benefit of believing that hard things are going to be hard,” Johnson revealed.

“I didn’t grow up in a household where everything I wanted I got or there weren’t people from my neighbourhood who went on to achieve amazing things. Everything was hard and you would not get what you believed you deserved, you had to work hard for everything. I benefited from that and I never expected any of these things to be easy.”
