Former world under-20 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi is bracing up for a do-or-die battle as he heads to the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary from August 19 to 27.
Wanyonyi revealed that his encounter at last year’s World Championships was not a walk in the park and there is no doubt that this year’s event will be the same. He finished fourth, a position that most junior athletes find difficult to accomplish when competing in the senior category.

The 18-year-old sneaked through a strong field to claim his second Diamond League win on Friday
The 18-year-old recalled that he had to dig deep to get to the final and eventually manage a fourth-place finish.
“I want to train effectively for the World Championships because it isn’t easy, especially for us who are transitioning from the junior to the senior category.
As a youngster, you need to gain more experience to know how to execute the race well. You also need mental strength and also listening to your coach keenly if you want to do well,” he said.
He added that opening his season with the World Cross-country Championships is the secret behind his great form this season. In the X-country, he competed in the mixed relay where his team won.
He revealed that since then, he has been working on his speed and he is happy with the progress so far. He opened his track season with a win at the Kip Keino Classic on May 13.
Wanyonyi then proceeded to the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Morocco where he floored the oldies to take the top honours.
