Athletics coach Bernard Ouma has explained why it will not be a good idea to have Kelvin Kiptum and Eliud Kipchoge go head-to-head in the marathon at the Olympic Games.

Head coach and founder of the Rongai Athletics Club Bernard Ouma believes pairing Kelvin Kiptum and Eliud Kipchoge at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games is not a wise move.

Ouma, who coaches 2019 World 1500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot, noted that there are several factors that make matching up the duo a very risky move.

Kiptum is the current world record holder in the marathon, having clocked 2:00:35 to win the Chicago Marathon last month. He took over from Kipchoge, who is considered the greatest marathoner of all time.

Kipchoge was the previous marathon record holder, having run 2:01:09 to win the 2022 edition of the Berlin Marathon.

“I don’t think you would want to put Kipchoge and Kiptum head-to-head with a number of factors being considered," Ouma told Nation.

"All of them are amazing road runners…Kipchoge is a special guy if you look at his personality, how he speaks, and how he resonates with the public. His human skills are so high and even when you look at his longevity, he is actually one of the longest-serving runners.

"He started running in 2003 when Kiptum was probably three years old…you wouldn’t want to put the two head-to-head.

"Kiptum has his opportunity, he knocked on the door and it is surely opening. He has to build his path and history and has to convince us that he is ready to take the throne when the king retires."

He added that Kipchoge is still the greatest of all time, owing to his longevity in the sport, and until Kiptum gets there, the 39-year-old will keep ruling.

Ouma noted that you cannot buy the name and it is something Kiptum has to work hard in order to achieve it.

“They are all our brothers…but if Kipchoge passes through town walking, there will be a standstill but if Kiptum passes, nothing will happen," he said.

"Kiptum has a long way to go…records take time to be broken but if you break it a lot, people will forget easily but if it takes time, people are hungry and they will be anxiously waiting.”
