Team Kenya are under pressure to deliver the steeplechase gold that was a preserve of the country until recently when rivals spoilt their party

Down the years, steeplechase has always been known as a 'Kenyan race' as the country dominated the distance at nearly all Olympics and World Championships until two years ago when things changed and now, it seems to be getting out of hand.

The recent blow to Kenya came when Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma broke the men’s world record at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris, France. Girma ran a tactical race to clock 7:52.11 to completely destroy Kenyan-born Qatari Saif Saaeed’s record of 7:53.63.

Kenya has also struggled to retain the title in both the men’s and women’s races. During last year’s edition of the global event, no Kenyan made it to the podium in the women’s event. In the men’s event, two-time world champion Conseslus Kipruto managed third.

As a team of six, three men and women, head to this year’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Team Manager David Bunei has exuded confidence that Team Kenya will reclaim the lost glory.

In the men's race, Abraham Kibiwott will team up with Leonard Bett and Simon Koech while in the women's field, the world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech will be joined by Jackline Chepkoech and Faith Cherotich.

I know many Kenyans are waiting to see what will happen in the steeplechase. We have injected a new plan and we are going to surprise the world. We want to request Kenyans to pray for us as we seek to come back home with medals,” said Bunei.

He also extended a hand of gratitude to the Ministry of Sports and Athletics Kenya for the support they have accorded the athletes and technical bench during preparations.

Team Kenya were pitching camp at the Kasarani Stadium, sharpening their talons with the hope of proving a point when they head to Budapest.
