Weldon Langat is determined to go one place better than his second-place finish last year.

A star-studded field of athletes from across the globe will turn towards Brasov in just under a month’s time as they aim to make statements in the Romanian city for the Brasov Running Festival in the weekend of September 9 to 10.

The Trunsylvania 10km – a World Athletics Elite Label Race and the only road race of this status in Romania – has attracted some of the top athletes including Weldon Langat, who is determined to go one place better than his second-place finish last year.

The 25-year-old competed at the Valencia 10km race earlier this year and clocked 26:55, which equaled his Personal Best time from Brasov last September.

Langat has set his target on the Trunsylvania 10km course record of 26:51 set by his compatriot Nicholas Kimeli who is the defending champion.

Cornelius Kemboi, 2018 World U20 5000m Champion Edward Zakayo, Emanuel Kiprop, and Laban Kiplimo will also be vying for a slot at the high table.

Meanwhile, Agnes Ngetich headlines the women’s field. Ngetich was in action at the ongoing World Championships in Budapest, Hungary where she finished sixth in the 10,000m in a PB time of 31:34.83.

In 2022, she was the pacemaker for the women’s race in Brasov but stayed in to finish second. Ngetich then went on to take the World Cross Country Championships bronze medal.

Other leading names in women’s 10km race include Esther Borura, Catherine Relin, Uganda’s Joy Cheptoyek, Great Britain’s Samantha Harrison, and Joan Chelimo Melly.

Further elite runners for the Trunsylvania 10km – part of the Brasov Running Festival – will be announced closer to the race.

The Brasov Running Festival will also feature a European Road Mile on Saturday, September 9 which will bring together many of the continent’s top middle-distance runners.

“We are in the process of establishing the Brasov Running Festival as one of the leading road race events in Europe with the ultimate aim of seeing world records set here,” commented Race Director Daniel Santa.

“With it being in the heart of Transylvania, the scenery only enhances what we expect will be spectacular performances by the elite athletes in the 10km while the race offers a fantastic experience to those in the mass participation event,” he added.

In addition to the Trunsylvania 10km and European Road Mile, The Brasov Running Festival is also designed to engage and involve non-elite runners of all age groups and abilities.

On September 9, there will also be the 800m, 1200m, and 3000m children’s races while September 10 will see mass participation in 5km and 10km races.
