Chepkirui added that she will go back to the drawing board ahead of the national trials for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Former World Under-20 1500m champion Purity Chepkirui has been conspicuously missing in action. The exciting youngster, hailed as the heir apparent to Faith Kipyegon's mile throne, was last seen in action earlier in the year but kept off tracks completely.

Pulse Sports caught up with Chepkirui who disclosed that earlier in the year she had gone for a cross-country in Spain where she sustained a nasty injury. The girl missed plenty training time and at some point developed doubts over making Team Kenya to the world championships which was her dream at the start of the season.

The 20-year-old has been missing from the Athletics Kenya meets but she has revealed she is now back on track and ready to conquer. She announced her comeback with a third-place finish at the National Championships held at the Nyayo National Stadium and she is plotting for bigger things going forward.

“The race was good but the weather was a bit challenging...I tried my best and finished third. I was competing to test whether I’m back on track and I’m impressed. I had an injury when I went to compete in Spain and it slowed me down,” she said.

The reigning World Under-20 1500m silver medallist added that she will go back to the drawing board and address some of the shortcomings she has ahead of the national trials for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

If she makes the cut to the global show, she will be competing with the senior athletes for the first time and she noted that her main aim will be to gain experience.

“I want to go back home and work extra hard so that I’m included in the national team. My main going there will be to gain experience from the seniors so that the next time I go there, I will have an idea of what it takes to medal in the senior category,” she said.
