Kelvin Kiptum is one of the unique cases of athletes who start their careers with road races and he has explained the reason behind his decision.
Unlike many other athletes who begin their careers on the track, reigning London Marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum started off his career with the Half Marathon.
A good example of a runner who has transitioned smoothly is the former world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge who started off with the 5000m before transitioning to the marathon.

ATHLETICS Kelvin Kiptum explains his thoughts while running to break marathon record
After his dominant display at the Chicago Marathon, Kelvin Kiptum shared what was going on in his mind during the race.
However, Kiptum did not have any interest in the track races since he is a fanatic of the long runs.
“I decided to run the marathon because two years ago I used to run in half marathons. At the time, I loved doing the long runs and that’s why I chose to run the marathon.
Back then, I used to train for the marathon and run the half marathon but now I have fully switched. I love the marathon,” Kiptum explained.

ATHLETICS Athletics expert explains why Kiptum has an edge over Kipchoge in sub-two-hour open marathon attempt
Following Kelvin Kiptum’s world record run in Chicago, experts feel he is best placed to run a fast ever sub-two-hour marathon due to a number of factors that give him an advantage.
The newly-crowned world marathon record holder started off his professional career with a dominant win at the 2018 Eldoret Half Marathon.
In 2019, he competed in four half marathons and a 10km road race. He had been confirmed for the Diamond League Meeting in Stockholm to compete in the 10,000m but he did not show up for the race.
Kiptum then competed in a couple of Half Marathons in 2020 and 2021 before making his marathon debut at the Valencia Marathon. He won the Valencia Marathon in the fastest debut time ever, clocking 2:01:53 to win the race.
