The only passenger who survived the accident that killed Kelvin Kiptum, has been discharged from a hospital in Eldoret after suffering serious injuries.
A woman who was involved in the fatal road accident that ended world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum’s life on Sunday night has been treated and discharged from a hospital in Eldoret.
Sharon Kosgei was treated and discharged from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

After pressure from his fans, marathon king Eliud Kipchoge has broken his silence with a condolence post towards Kelvin Kiptum's family which has not been taken lightly by Kenyans on X.
The 24-year-old was driving his car, a Toyota Premio, with Kosgei and his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana as his passengers, when he met his untimely death.
According to a police report at the Kaptagat Police Station, OB No. 19/11/02/2024 at 23:17 hours, Kiptum, lost control of his car and veered off the road, entering into a ditch on his left side and rolled for an estimated 60m before hitting a tree.

Kosgei sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) for treatment while the two bodies were ferried to Racecourse Hospital Mortuary in Eldoret awaiting autopsy.
Kiptum, who broke the world marathon record in Chicago, USA last October, was set to take part in the Rotterdam Marathon this April as part of his preparations for the Olympic Games in Paris.

The Police have reported that Kiptum and his Rwandese coach Garvais Hakizimana passed away on the spot Sunday night in an accident along the Eldoret-Kaptagat Road.

Occurred at Kaptagat Forest area along the Eldoret-Ravine road. It happened that one Kelvin Kiptum, the Chicago Marathon World Record Holder, was driving his m/vehicle reg. number KDL 566F Toyota Premio carrying two passengers, namely Gervais Hakizimana Rwanda, male adult aged 37yrs-his coach—and Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei Keiyo, a female adult aged 24 years from Eldoret heading towards Ravine.
Upon reaching the location of the accident, he lost control and veered off-road entering a ditch on his left side. He drove in the ditch for about 60 metres before hitting a big tree. As a result, Kelvin Kiptum and Gervais Hakizimana died on the spot whereas Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei escaped with serious injuries and was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.
