Ekwam will be making his debut at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and says his journey to stardom has just begun.

National 400m champion Zablon Ekwam might just be the new kid on the block but he has already set his sights on lofty ambitions in his career albeit currently battling mental health challenges.

Ekwam, 26, will be making his debut at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary and he says his journey to stardom has just begun.

The global showpiece will be his second event abroad since he competed at the BAA Track and Field Championships in Gaborone, Botswana where he propelled the 4x400m men’s and mixed relay teams to victory.

“This is just but the beginning of my journey…just expect to see Ekwam at the Diamond League Meetings starting next year. I will be competing at the Paris Olympics, Africa Championships, and the World Relay Championships.

"I will be at the Africa Senior Championships…all these dreams will come true and I hope I will be in my great shape,” he told Nation.

Ekwam noted that his endurance is on a good course and the only thing he is yet to hack is his mental health. He attested that he has been battling a lot of issues and he is hopeful that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“My endurance is okay…my diet and training are also okay. I’m just working on my mental health at the moment.

"This will really help me a lot and I have been competing under a lot of pressure…my dad is sick and I have been handling a lot of issues. When everything is set and I get to work with great people, expect to see fireworks,” he said.

As he heads to the World Championships, Ekwam’s heart is full of gratitude and he has promised to finish in the podium bracket in both events he will be competing in.

“I’m just happy because this is my first time…some people have completed their careers without even competing at the World Championships but I have gotten this chance. People should just expect a podium finish…our training is going on well,” he said.

In the men’s 4x400m relay team, national champions Wiseman Were and Ekwam will be joined by Commonwealth Games 800m champion Wycliffe Kinyamal, Kelvin Sawe, Alex Ng’eno, and Kennedy Musyoki.

Kinyamal will lead the mixed relay team that also includes Musyoki, Ekwam, Mercy Oketch, Millicent Ndoro, and Maureen Thomas.
