Bulgak and her side will get a day off on Saturday and wait to play in the bronze game on Sunday. And having won their first ever competitive game against Rwanda on Wednesday, South Sudan will be out in search of their second to leave the stage on a high.
Kenya collected a whooping 70 rebounds in their 80-51 win over South Sudan at the ongoing Fiba Women’s Zone V AfroBasket Qualifiers in Kampala, Uganda.
The Lionesses cleaned the glass and limited South Sudan to just 39 rebounds Friday night at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
Madina Okot and Christine Akinyi led Kenya’s rebounding party, picking 18 and 12 respectively to guide Kenya to a third straight win of the qualifiers.
On the opposing side was South Sudan captain Adut Bulgak, who led her side in scoring and rebounding. But her 10 points and 16 rebounds were not enough as Ebony Hoffman’s side fell for the third time.
“I think we handled the ball a lot better. We have been having a problem of turnovers,” Bulgak said.
“One thing that killed us was rebounds, Kenya rebounded unbelievably today,” she added.
South Sudan were without Rose Akon, who got hurt in the game against Uganda and only Bulgak managed to get into double figures.
Bulgak and her side will get a day off on Saturday and wait to play in the third place playoff on Sunday. And having won their first ever competitive game against Rwanda on Wednesday, South Sudan will be out in search of their second to leave the stage on a high.
“We just have to make better effort in stopping the rebounds. We need to really focus on ourselves, find our mistakes.”
South Sudan are playing in their second tournament and have just one win in eight games. They lost all four games in the 2021 qualifiers held in Kigali, Rwanda and have already lost three in Kampala.
The clash between Kenya and Egypt will determine which teams face off in the decider for a ticket to AfroBasket and the team that drops to face South Sudan in the bronze game.
