The announcement came as a surprise to many, especially after Antuna's successful tenure with the team.
Alberto Antuna has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Uganda Gazelles, the national women's basketball team.
The announcement came as a surprise to many, especially after Antuna's successful tenure with the team.
On his official Twitter handle, Antuna shared his heartfelt sentiments, saying: "It's time to say goodbye.”
“Being part of 'The Gazelles' in such a short span has deeply enriched my experience as a coach; we made history together,” Antuna added.
He went on to express his gratitude, particularly to the players and FUBA's President Nasser, hinting that this might not be a permanent farewell, "I am sure it's not goodbye, but until next time, UG."
Antuna, originally from Spain, took up the mantle as the Gazelles' head coach in January 2023. Under his leadership, the team secured a second-place finish in the FIBA Zone V Afrobasket 2023 qualifiers, narrowly losing the final 64-74 to Egypt.
Although the Gazelles only entered the Afrobasket tournament through a wild card, their performance was nothing short of impressive.
They secured victories against notable teams, including the eleven-time African champions Senegal, as well as DR. Congo and Guinea. Their journey was halted by Rwanda in the quarter-finals.
Securing three wins in the Afrobasket and achieving a seventh-place finish marked a significant milestone for the Gazelles. The search is now on for FUBA to appoint a worthy successor to Alberto Antuna.
