KIU Rangers forward Diana Letaru has joined the long list of Ugandan female basketball players plying their trade in US Colleges.

The forward has joined Grayson College in the United States and will team up with another Ugandan, Priscilla Abby.

Letwaru, who averaged 15 points and eight rebounds in the first round of the National Basketball League, was announced as a Grayson player hour ago by the university basketball programme.

“Signed. Help us welcome Diana Letaru to the Grayson fam!” Grayson College Women’s Basketball announced on Twitter.

Letaru was part of Uganda’s National Basketball U18 Girls team, the Junior Gazelles, that played at the FIBA Afrobasket U18 finals in Madagascar last year.

She has been in impressive form since switching from Magic Stormers to the Rangers and immediately became a big piece on the team.

Former JKL Lady Dolphins forward Jane Asinde is the other player who has gone through the Grayson basketball programme, joining in 2019 from the two-time Ugandan champions.

The list of female players in the US now continues to grow.

Asinde (University of Texas), Melissa Akullu (Vanguard University) and Jamila Nansikombi (Troy University) are some of Uganda’s exports to the US that are expected to suit up for the Gazelles at the Afrobasket next month.

Sharon Karungi and Claire Lamunu are the other Ugandans who have gone through the US College system in their careers.

Maria Najjuma, Esther Kwagala and Lydia Babirye are the other Ugandan players plying their trade in the US.

KIU Rangers are losing a star but were quick to send their congratulatory message and wish Letaru the best in her next chapter.

The Rangers Twitter handle wrote: “With love, Princess the Rangers family shall dearly miss you. Thank you for your time with us. It was worth it. The sportsmanship, character and zeal you added to the team are duly appreciated. Once a Ranger, always a Ranger. Go make us proud in your new chapter.”

Letaru’s performance helped the Rangers to a decent 8-3 record to finish the first round fourth on the log.

Even without her services, KIU will be confident of making the playoffs and challenging the top order for a place in the finals.
