Wakama, who is an indigene of the Rivers State of Nigeria, takes charge of Nigeria's national women's team, known as D'Tigress ahead of a major tournament.

1 month before the start of the 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket NBBF, Rena Wakama is appointed Head Coach of D'Tigress.

Coach Rena Wakama has been hired by the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) to lead the Team Nigeria Women's basketball team for a period of two years. 

Former member of the Nigerian National team, Coach Rena Wakama serves as the head coach's Assistant Coach at Stony Brook University. 

In addition to playing for the Senior Nigerian National Team, Wakama was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Western Carolina and a professional basketball player in the United Kingdom.

Wakama earned an MBA from Manhattan in 2019 after graduating with a bachelor's in therapeutic recreation from Western Carolina in 2014.

2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket

Wakama, who is an indigene of the Rivers State of Nigeria, takes charge of Nigeria's national women's team, known as D'Tigress ahead of a major tournament.

D'Tigress are the defending champions and have a new coach ahead of the 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.

Nigeria's DTigress, who are the reigning champions, are in Group D, and will face Egypt, and DR. Congo.

From July 28 to August 6 at Kigali Arena, the tournament's 26th edition will be played.

The participation of D'Tigress at the 2023 Afrobasket Women's tournament comes after a ban on basketball by former President Muhammadu Buhari prevented the team from competing at the 2022 FIBA Women's World Cup.
