The Silverbacks gave the ball away 32 times and were punished for it. Angola scored 33 of their 82 points from Uganda’s turnovers.

When you lose a basketball game by 33 points, and have another tough fixture coming up, it is understandable to run out of word.

The Silverbacks were thumped 82-49 in the Fiba Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers Friday night and face Corte d’Ivoire on Saturday.

Fayed Baale didn’t not have many words in the post-game press conference, where he appeared alongside stand-in coach Andrew Tendo.

“They (Angola) baited us to rush the ball and we made a couple of turnovers,” the point guard said.

“The turnovers turned into their baskets so, I believe they beat us from there,” he added.

The Silverbacks gave the ball away 32 times and were punished for it. Angola scored 33 of their 82 points from Uganda’s turnovers.

James Okello and Ceaser Kizito turned it over the most on the night, six times apiece.

Team captain Jimmy Enabu gave it away five times while Titus Lual and Innocent Ochera were guilty on three occasions.

Debutant Rogers Dauna and Peter Obleng turned it over twice while Stanley Mugerwa had a single turnover.

Everyone on the team scored in the turnover column and corrections must be made ahead of the next two games.

The hosts had a massive 48 points in the paint compared to Uganda’s 10 and also got 21 second chance points.

Terrible shooting

Uganda shot a dismal 17 for 53 from the field and gave away too many shots on the other end.

Angola’s 33 for 93 ensured there was daylight between the two sides in the end.

The 11-time African champions shot nine for 33 from three-point range and 24 for 60 inside the paint.

Uganda will have to take good care of the ball in the next two games while getting stops on the other end.

But with a much smaller team, both in size and number, compared to the opponents, it will be tough all weekend.

The Silverbacks travelled with just nine locally based players and arrived in Angola Friday morning, a few hours to the first game.
