At 6’4, Najjuma is a big unit and will add size to a predominately small Gazelles team.
Maria Najjuma announced her arrival on the basketball scene in 2019. She featured for the Uganda women’s U16 side that took part in the FIBA U16 Women’s African Championship held in Kigali, Rwanda.
Her numbers were insane, averaging 17 points and 28 rebounds as Uganda finished fifth on her championship debut.
She was named on the tournament’s best five and later, in 2022, was handed an opportunity to join the NBA Academy in Saly, Senegal.
The 19-year-old has now been called up to join the Gazelles team preparing for the FIBA Zone V Afrobasket Qualifiers.
The team has been training for the last three weeks and will enter camp next week to further prepare for the February 14-19 championship. At 6’4, Najjuma is a big unit and will add size to a predominately small Gazelles team.
She is expected to join the team on February 12, just two days to tip off of the tournament. Bridget Aber is the locally based center expected to cut the final 12.
Hope Akello and Sarah Ageno are the other elite bigs available for head coach Alberto Antuna.
