Uganda will face Angola on February 24th, Ivory Coast on 25th and Guinea on 26th in Luanda, Angola.
The national women’s basketball team, Gazelles start their Fiba Zone V AfroBasket Qualifiers against Kenya Tuesday night at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
It is the first time the Gazelles will be in action in about five years and they have had all the attention on them.
Having started preparations on January 16th, the Gazelles have had the best preparation prior to a tournament and will fancy their chances of booking a ticket the AfroBasket slated for July 28th-August 6th in Kigali, Rwanda.
And while the focus is on the Gazelles, little is said about the Silverbacks, the men’s senior team supposed to be in Angola for the final round of the Fiba Basketball World Cup Qualifiers.
Uganda will face Angola on February 24th, Ivory Coast on 25th and Guinea on 26th in Luanda, Angola.
Whether the team will make it to Luanda is conundrum Fuba is yet to pay full attention to.
“We are supposed to have the Silverbacks going to Angola but all our focus right now is on the Gazelles,” Fuba President Nasser Sserunjogi said in a television interview Tuesday morning.
“We are hosting the qualifiers and we want to qualify for AfroBasket,” he added.
The Silverbacks are not even preparing ad there is uncertainty as to whether the team will make the trip.
With players like Ishmail Wainright, Arthur Kaluma and Adam Seiko unavailable, it remains to be seen what kind of team will be sent out there but most importantly whether Uganda will actually make the trip.
“It is not looking good at the moment. We are in talks with NCS, and we shall see how that goes. We are on the fixture, and if you don’t appear, then there is a fine.”
Uganda has absolutely no chance of being one of the five teams to represent Africa at the World Cup slated for August 25th to September 10th 2023 in Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
That 77-74 win over Cape Verde in November 2021 remains as Uganda’s only win in these qualifiers. The Silverbacks 1-6 record has them rooted at the base of group E and already eliminated.
But even then, fixtures are supposed to be honoured and George Galanapolous’ troops will be expected to be in Angola.
