Victory for the hosts on Thursday will be enough to put them in the top two and that is just a step closer to qualification.

For a moment, new Uganda Gazelles head coach Alberto Antuna did not know Uganda’s next opponent after that classic 86-85 win over Zone V giants Egypt.

The tactician had just guided Uganda to one of her most iconic wins when the press approached for comments on what to expect in the next game.

“Now I don’t even know who we play against,” Antuna said with a cheeky laughter.

“This was a big win for Uganda, a big win for the federation (FUBA) and most importantly for the girls for the work they have been doing,” the Spaniard added.

Antuna’s first win as Gazelles head coach came in his second game. The first one was a 61-53 loss to neighbours Kenya.

Uganda’s next opponent is South Sudan, a team that registered her first ever win in competitive basketball on Wednesday.

That 54-40 win over Rwanda will have put Ebby Hoffman’s charges in the mood for more wins and Uganda must beware.

“We are gonna try to rest, eat good, rest good and prepare for the game,” Antuna noted.

“The girls were happy, they enjoy playing , we made 86 points against Egypt and I love how the crowd pushed us.”

It is not time to celebrate yet and the Gazelles know it. There is only one ticket to AfroBasket and that will be taken by the team that wins Sunday’s decider.

After each team has played the other once, the top two will face off in the final to determine who takes the Zone V slot at the continental showpiece slated for July 28th to August 6th in Kigali, Rwanda.

Victory for the hosts on Thursday will be enough to put them in the top two and that is just a step closer to qualification.

Jannon Otto, who scored 27 points and picked 14 rebounds against Egypt, is averaging 11 points and seven rebounds to lead Uganda’s charge to AfroBasket.
