Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the NBA's most popular players and is of Nigerian descent.

In addition to winning the 2021 NBA title with his squad, he has won two league overall MVP awards and was voted the 2021 Finals MVP. 

However, until last year, the 29-year-old, who was raised in Greece, had never visited his parents' native Nigeria.

Instant messaging platform WhatsApp released a documentary about Antetokounmpo coming to Nigeria in 2023.

A statement about his return by WhatsApp said, "Global basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo returns to his roots in Nigeria.

"After a life spent in Greece and a career spent in the US, he heads to his homeland to discover where his story started.

"Here, he reconnects with his family, his heritage, and himself like never before. Presented by WhatsApp."

Since he appeared in WhatsApp's inaugural worldwide commercial in 2022, Antetokounmpo has partnered with the messaging platform as a brand.

In the brand-new WhatsApp short documentary Ugo: A Homecoming Story, the celebrity describes his first trip to Nigeria and how he saw, touched, and felt a people, a country, and family he had only ever known from a distance.

The documentary, which was directed by Rick Famuyiwa, follows Antetokounmpo as he travels through marketplaces, cities, and beaches. N

Nigerian designers and artists share their perspectives on the distinctive culture of their nation throughout the film.

In a standout moment, Antetokounmpo stops his vehicle in the middle of bustling Balogun Market to exchange a replica of his own Milwaukee Bucks jersey for a replica from a vendor.

Giannis is now back with the Milwaukee Bucks as they target another Championship in 2024.
