Egypt have a score to settle with Kenya. It is the same team that defeated the Pharaohs in the final of the last qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda.
Kenya Lionesses defeated South Sudan 80-51 Friday night to record their third straight win at the ongoing Fiba Women’s Zone V AfroBasket Qualifiers in Kampala.
Having already beaten hosts Uganda and Rwanda, George Mayienga’s side found little resistance from a South Sudan side that only won their first ever competitive win in Fiba organised events.
Christine Akinyi posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Zone V champions while Victoria Reynolds contributed 17 points and eight rebounds.
There was also a double-double for centre Madina Okot, 11 points and 18 rebounds in 20 minutes. Mercy Wanyama, with 14 points completed the quartet of Kenyans to score in double figures.
The defending champions were on top of proceedings from the start, dominating the boards through Okot and Wanyama. The two dominated the glass and forced South Sudan to rely on the three-point shot.
Kenya led 21-15 after the first quarter and that stretched to 11 points (36-25) going into the halftime break.
There was no coming back for Ebony Hoffman’s charges as Kenya dominated the last two quarters 44-26 to win by 29 and remain unbeaten.
Team captain Adut Bulgak was the only South Sudan player to score in double figures, her 10 points and 16 rebounds not enough as the side succumbed to a third defeat to complete their round robin fixture.
Reigning National Basketball League MVP Rose Akon missed the game.
Egypt up next for Kenya
Egypt have a score to settle with Kenya. It is the same team that defeated the Pharaohs in the final of the last qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda.
Saturday will present the perfect platform for that revenge. The two sides clash at a time Egypt have their backs against the wall.
Victory for Kenya will automatically rule Egypt out of Sunday’s decider for who takes the lone ticket to this year’s Fiba AfroBasket in Kigali, Rwanda.
With Rwanda’s results only academic in these qualifiers, results from the other four teams have both Kenya and Uganda on two wins already. Egypt are on one and cannot afford to lose to Kenya.
A win for Egypt will put the three teams in a tie break.
Meanwhile Egypt pummelled Rwanda 102-56 to recover from that 86-85 loss to Uganda.
The hosts will face Rwanda on Saturday and by the time that game tips off, it will be known whether they will play in Sunday’s decider or third place playoff.
