City Oilers needed to beat Cape Town Tigers to book a ticket to Kigali but fell short in a game they struggled for offence all day.

City Oilers head coach Mandy Juruni says playing at the Basketball Africa League is an honour despite the team failing to make it past the regular season.

The Ugandan champions lost 80-70 to the Cape Town Tigers on Saturday to miss out on a ticket to the playoffs in Kigali, Rwanda.

“It was a good experience. We had some good games, we had some great moments,” Juruni said after Saturday’s game, the team’s last of the Nile Conference.

“We had some bad moments as well, but competitions are like that. This is high competition in terms of clubs basketball in Africa, so for us to be here and compete against the best on the continent is an honour,” he added.

“We have learnt a lot, and we are happy to be here to represent our club and country.

City Oilers needed to beat Cape Town Tigers to book a ticket to Kigali but fell short in a game they struggled for offence all day.

“We were a bit flat on defence. I don’t think we did a good job of making consistent stops; they shot the ball, they drove the ball, and we didn’t have that firepower in us.

“Our efficiency was not as good as yesterday, and I think the other team also did a very good job trying to stop our two scorers.

“Maybe the other guys should have come in to give us that lift.”

Falando Jones scored 27 points but was the only Oilers’ player to hit double figures as Jame Justice Jr. was limited to just nine.

An injury to Germaine Roebuck Jr. in the first half did not help matters as City Oilers struggled to get going, especially in the second half of the game.

City Oilers ended the tournament bottom of the Nile Conference with a 1-4 record and will now turn their focus to the National Basketball League.
