The shooting claimed the lives of eight children and a security guard. Doncic has close family ties to the region, with a grandmother, auntie, uncle, and teenage cousin living in the Serbian capital's territory.
Doncic's father, Sasha, is also a native of Serbia. "I am heartbroken by the tragic school shooting in Serbia and the loss of lives, including those of innocent school children," Doncic said in a statement. "My thoughts are with the families and the entire community affected by this tragedy,” he added.
Doncic's Foundation will provide immediate and long-term support to the students, faculty, and families affected by the shooting. He plans to commit to any long-term assistance that may arise in the aftermath of the shooting. Doncic is also expected to involve other NBA players with Balkan roots to help in the tragedy's aftermath.
Through his spokesperson, Doncic shared his commitment to supporting the community, saying, "I am committed, and I will continue to share updates and ways to support as details become available."
