All hope is not lost after that commendable performance by Alberto Antuna’s charges.
The Uganda Gazelles lost 74-65 in the Fiba women’s Zone V AfroBasket Qualifiers final Sunday night at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
The Pharaohs ended up taking the lone ticket to the continental showpiece, leaving Uganda fans devasted.
But all hope is not lost after that commendable performance by Alberto Antuna’s charges.
Fuba President Nasser Sserunjogi has confirmed that the Gazelles will actually be at the finals in Kigali, Rwanda come July 28th to August 6th.
“Zone V will get wild card,” Sserunjogi confirmed in a television interview Monday morning.
“The games were competitive and I have been told that we shall get the wild card,” he added.
“We are only waiting for communication. We shall be at AfroBasket in Kigali, Rwanda.”
Zone V already has two teams at the finals, Egypt, the winners of the qualifiers as well as Rwanda, the hosts.
Sserunjogi also confirmed to have informed some of the Ugandan players plying their trade in the US of the development and need to be ready when the time comes.
“I have talked to the players and informed them that we have qualified.”
Players like Jane Asinde, Melissa Akullu, Jamila Nansikombi and Priscilla Abei are all playing at the high level and missed the qualifiers due to College commitments.
The Gazelles last played at AfroBasket in 2015 and in the current squad, it is only Flavia Oketcho who was part of the team that made the trip to Cameroon back then.
