A1 Challenge displayed an impressive performance as they narrowly defeated the Nkumba Lady Marines with a score of 62-58, securing their second win of the season in an intense National Basketball League (NBL) game on Sunday at the NCS Arena.
The match remained closely contested from start to finish, with both teams exchanging baskets throughout.
However, the Lady Marines' careless turnovers in the game's final moments almost cost them their victory.
Despite the win, A1 Challenge head coach Eric Matovu acknowledged the Lady Marines for providing tough competition and putting up a close fight.
"The game was a close one because the Lady Marines have elevated their performance, just like every team in the second round," Matovu expressed in an interview with Pulse Sports.
"Credit to them for playing well, but in the end, the better team emerged victorious," Matovu added.
Matovu also recognized this win's positive impact on his team's confidence as they aim to secure consecutive victories for the first time this season in their upcoming fixture.
"This victory will boost our confidence moving forward and hopefully change our fortunes for the better as we progress in the second round," he added optimistically.
Lady Marines Alassistant head coach Edwin Manzi praised his team's efforts despite the loss and highlighted the lessons they can take from this defeat.
"It was an extremely close game, and on a different day, we could have emerged as the winners," Manzi stated to Pulse Sports.
"Unfortunately, our turnovers towards the end of the game proved costly, and credit goes to our opponents for their clutch performance in the fourth quarter.”
"We have made significant improvements since the first round. And there are positive aspects we can draw from this defeat.”
“We will work on those areas as we progress in future fixtures," he added.
Yahweh Precious led the scoring for A1 Challenge with 15 points, delivering some crucial three-pointers in the fourth quarter that ultimately sealed the victory for her team.
On the other hand, Isabella Namugabo of the Lady Marines displayed an outstanding performance, leading all scorers with 20 points despite her team's loss.
In their next game, A1 Challenge will face Nabisunsa Girls, aiming to achieve back-to-back wins. Meanwhile, the Nkumba Lady Marines will take on the JT Lady Jaguars, seeking a triumphant rebound.
