She averaged 16 points and 14 rebounds in the regular season. In Game Seven of the finals, the South Sudanese scored 22 points and grabbed 29 rebounds to help the Lady Canons to a 75-67 win and the championship.

National Basketball League MVP Rose Akon is in the South Sudan team for the FIBA Women’s Zone V Afrobasket Qualifiers.

It is the centre’s first return to Kampala since winning the league with the UCU Lady Canons in October 2022. Akon led the Lady Canons from a 3-1 hole to beat JKL Lady Dolphins 4-3 in the best of seven series.

She averaged 16 points and 14 rebounds in the regular season. In Game Seven of the finals, the South Sudanese scored 22 points and grabbed 29 rebounds to help the Lady Canons to a 75-67 win and the championship.

She was awarded both the MVP and Defensive Player of the Finals for her outstanding performance but left the university side to play professional basketball in Morocco.

Akon’s basketball journey started in Uganda and she was scouted by UCU Lady Canons coach Nicholas Natuhereza to join Uganda Christian University on a full sports scholarship.

She graduated last year with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance and now has her full focus on professional basketball. After her studies at UCU, teams from Rwanda, Morocco and Georgia were interested in her services.

Having also played for Rwanda’s REG, Akon will be going up against familiar faces in Kampala.

Efforts to have her represent Uganda failed after she was convinced that South Sudan had a good programme in place to support her national team career.

She chose South Sudan over Uganda

The Qualifiers get underway Tuesday at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala with Egypt, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda fighting for one ticket to AfroBasket.
