With a quarter-final target in mind, Gazelle Jannon Jay Otoo stresses that the team needs to play smarter and fight in every game during the tournament.

The FIBA Women’s Afrobasket tournament is again upon us, even more, interesting as Uganda prepares to make her third appearance at the showpiece.

With a quarter-final target in mind, Gazelle Jannon Jay Otoo stresses that the team needs to play smarter and fight in every game during the tournament.

“We haven’t been at Afrobasket in almost eight years, so it’s great to get back,” Otoo told Pulse Sports on the side-lines of the Monday night training session.

“Only Flavia Oketcho on the current team played at our last appearance, so it’s an honour to play for Uganda.”

“We need to compete as hard as we can and fight in every game because I feel we have good players and depth,” she added.

Uganda is pooled in group C alongside Mali and Senegal, who both have more experienced players with size, but Otoo adds that using the team’s advantage, like playing smarter and faster, will be key.

“I think for us, we’re not bigger (in size) and stronger, but we have to be smarter and faster, basically using what we have to our advantage,” Otoo added.

The Luxembourg-based Muskel Pikes guard first represented Uganda at the FIBA Zone V qualifiers in February 2023, and she has since felt at home within the group

“I feel like everyone is welcoming and warm, making me feel part of the team, we gel well together, and we play for each other on and off the court, which is great. Also, the competition is a lot higher amongst us,” she added.

The Gazelles face Mali first on 29th July before taking on Senegal the next day at the BK Kigali Arena.
