Politics and sports mix as President Tinubu celebrates D'Tigress for 4th straight Afrobasket triumph.
Nigeria defeated Senegal 84-74 on Saturday in Kigali, Rwanda, to become the first team to win a fourth consecutive FIBA Women's AfroBasket title.
The D'Tigresses of Nigeria not only won the African championship for the fourth time straight, but they also went undefeated in the tournament and extended their continental winning streak to 24-0, going back to the Women's AfroBasket Third-Place game in Yaounde in 2015.
The 26-year-old Amy Okonkwo was chosen as the tournament MVP as she made a big difference for D'Tigress
Okonkwo emerged as the team's leader in the Rwandan capital of Kigali, averaging a team-high 17.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game for the D'Tigress.
Rena Wakama was appointed Head Coach of D'Tigress just weeks before the start of the tournament and is now the first female head coach to win a Women's AfroBasket championship.
Tinubu on D'Tigress
President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Bola Tinubu congratulated D'Tigress on the victory.
On Twitter he said, "I congratulate our very own D'Tigress @DtigressNG for a well deserved fourth consecutive AfroBasket Women Championship. We are proud of you.
Atiku on D'Tigress
People's Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential flagbearer Atiku Abubakar also congratulated D'Tigress.
He said, "Thrilled at our national women’s basketball team, @DtigressNG, dominating the Afrobasket 2023 championship!
"Your victory, making us the second African nation to win this prestigious title four times consecutively, radiates with Nigerian spirit and grit. -AA"
It is unknown if the Federal government will host the team when they return to the country.
