South Sudan could not stop Uganda in transition and struggled with the intensity of the game.

If there was anyone on the South Sudan team expected to have a good game against Uganda in the ongoing Fiba Women’s Zone V AfroBasket Qualifiers, it was Rose Akon.

She knows Ugandan basketball well and was out to prove a point having chosen to represent South Sudan even when playing for Uganda was an option.

She is the reigning National Basketball League MVP having won the league title with the UCU Lady Canons last October and had a big crowd of South Sudan fans throwing around ‘MVP’ chants every time she made a good play.

But Akon was on the losing end as the Gazelles beat South Sudan 74-53 to brighten their chances of progressing to Sunday’s decider but also end any hopes for the neighbours.

“We made a lot of mistakes that we need to work on,” Akon said after the Thursday night’s defeat.

The former Lady Canons center, who now plies her trade in Morocco, was in her element and managed a double-double of 15 points and 17 rebounds in 20 minutes.

“There is a lot we have to work on as a team. There is so much we didn't do right, we didn't follow the game plan we had,” she added.

South Sudan could not stop Uganda in transition and struggled with the intensity of the game.

Uganda head coach Alberto Antuna emphasized quick transition offense and it was executed well by the Gazelles mainly through Brenda Ekone.

The JKL Lady Dolphins guard took the ball to the hole at every opportunity and had the South Sudan team in early foul trouble.

“Individually, we all did our best and I'm so proud of my team and the effort they put out tonight.

“Congrats to the Uganda team, I know they gave out a good fight today.

“We shall correct the things that we didn't do well and we’ll be better.”

South Sudan will face Kenya on Friday night.
