The South Sudan women’s basketball team is only playing in its second tournament. The first was at this very stage, the Fiba Women’s Zone V Afrobasket Qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda.
Now playing in their second event, South Sudan have already showed what a tough team they can be in the near future.
Adut Bulgak and Teny Nyamuoch executed some great pick and rolls in the clash with Egypt and there was a lot more for the newest member of the zone to celebrate in defeat.
Egypt went on to win the opener 83-68 and South Sudan will be looking for their first win when the face Rwanda Wednesday evening.
Bulgak was a handful for the Egyptian bigs and got a double-double of 16 points and 20 rebounds.
Nyamuoch directed the traffic on the floor and got some big shots down the stretch as South Sudan fought to get back into the tie. She recorded 16 points on the day.
Tac Acheil scored 13 points and was the only other player from Ebony Hoffman’s side to get into double figures.

Nadine Mohammed, who scored 19 points for the North Africans, shot five of eight from three-points range as Ehab Elaffy’s troops started the tournament with a hard-fought victory.
Raneem Egedawy got a game high 23 points while Soraia Deghady came off the bench to contribute 12 points, four rebounds and six assists.
Egypt led 19-14 after the first quarter and also took the second 26-19 to lead 44-33. Despite a late fight back by Uganda’s neighbours, it was Egypt that got off to a winning start.
It is clear that the South Sudan team lacks chemistry. But with more playing time and a few more additions to the team, they will be a tough side for the rest of Zone V.
