US-based Akullu arrived Monday morning, while Aber and Nanvubya have also returned from representing Uganda in the FIBA U23 Nations League in Kinshasa, DRC.

The Uganda Gazelles have this week before entering residential camp in preparation for the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.

The team of 19 must be trimmed to 12 before Saturday as head coach Alberto Antuna and his assistant Nicholas Natuhereza must find the right team for the championship.

Only ten players attended Monday’s training session, with several faces yet to turn up for their first session.

Team captain Flavia Oketcho was the last player to join the team, having taken part in Saturday’s session at Africa Bible University in Lubowa.

The team will, however, welcome more members of the squad, with the trio of Melissa Akullu, Bridget Aber and Shakirah Nanvubya all set to train on Tuesday.

The team is still without head coach Antuna, who is now expected to join on Thursday.

Claire Lamunu and Jannon Otto will be the last players to link up with the rest of the team.

Assistant coach Mavita Ali is also yet to join the team and is expected next week. The former KCCA Leopards tactician is one of the 28 basketball coaches from 17 African countries participating in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

She’ll be working with the San Antonio Spurs between July 7-17.

The Gazelles will have a two-week residential camp before flying out to Kigali, Rwanda, for the tournament.

Uganda is in Group C alongside giants Senegal and Mali.
