BASKETBALL UCU Canons thump sluggish Power

Kayanga shot five-for-10 from downtown on the way to a game-high 21 points in a matter of 17 minutes.

Dmark Power’s hopes of bouncing back from that loss to the Kampala Rockets were quickly extinguished by the UCU Canons on Friday night.

The Canons hammered the five-time champions from tipoff until the end, a 31-point deficit in the end, somewhat flattering Timothy Odeke’s side in a one-sided affair.

Jerry Kayanga led the charge for the university early on, shooting the ball from range for his side to lead 24-09 after the first ten minutes.

By halftime, Power were trailing by 28 (48-20) after a first half of poor efficiency on both ends of the ball.

The lead ballooned to 35 (69-34) at the end of the third frame, and the Canons’ bench got valuable minutes in the last ten minutes of the game.

Power’s late fightback saw them take the last quarter 16-12, but there was no way back.

Kayanga shot five-for-10 from downtown on the way to a game-high 21 points in a matter of 17 minutes.

Jimmy Otim was four-for-five from distance and contributed 16 points, while Peter Sifuma got 12 points and six rebounds.

Guellord Mobanza drained four threes late in garbage time and ended the game with a team-high 12 points, while Samad Imran scored 11 points and pulled down 14 rebounds.

The two were the only Power players to score in double figures on the night.

The victory is UCU’s second in a row following their midweek win against the JKL Dolphins.

The Canons improved to a 3-3 record while Power, who have now lost three in a row, dropped to 2-5.
