The MTN Arena Lugogo was a site of sorrow and anguish on Sunday evening as the Uganda Gazelles lost 74-65 to Egypt in the Afrobasket Zone V Women qualifiers,
The defeat also meant Egypt qualified for the 2023 Afrobasket final tournament.
Raneem Elgedaway's double double of 19 points and 12 rebounds along with Radawa Salem Ahmed Sherif's 16 points and five rebounds lifted the Egyptians.
Soraya Deghady added 11 points which pushed the Egyptians to victory.
For the hosts, Brenda Ekone led with 25 points and seven rebounds followed by Jannon Jaye Otoo's 14 points and 8 rebounds.
Maria Najjuma's double double of 12 points and 12 rebounds and Hope Akello leading with the most rebounds (13) didn't help matters.
The game was tightly contested at least in the first two quarters. Egypt claimed the first quarter by a point, 20-19 but it is in the second quarter that the hosts stepped up.
With four minutes left to half time, Egypt led by four 31-27 but in quick succession, Brenda Ekone laid up to cut the lead to two before Jannon Jaye Otoo swiftly finished Evelyn Nakiyinji's pass to level the game at 31-31.
With two minutes left on the clock, Najjuma reacted fastest to lay up Otoo's pass on the inside which gave Uganda the lead for the first time in the game at 33-31.
However, Elgadeway's three free throws after Uganda's bench was given a technical foul gave Egypt the lead again at 36-35 which they stretched by half time to lead by two 40-38.
The Egyptians then kept the hosts at arms length in the third quarter with a six-point difference 59-53 and also sealed the deal in the fourth quarter where Najjuma fouled out with four minutes left on the clock.
The nine-point victory means Egypt have sealed the only Afrobasket ticket, with the showpiece set to take place in Kigali Rwanda in July.
